Magick, Spells and that Stuff

First, I feel I must say some things in order not to blow up later. SPELLS DO NOT WORK SIMPLY BY SAYING AN INCANTATION. THAT IS UTTER BULLSHIT AND I CANNOT BELIEVE ANYONE BUYS THAT. THERE MUST BE ENERGY INVOLVED, AND A GOOD DEAL OF IT ALONG WITH THE PROPER PROGRAMMING FOR IT TO WORK. Ok, now that it's over, let me explain how magick works.

Everyone has energy in their body, commonly known as chi/ chakra/ prana/ whatever-you-wanna-call-it. Magick is using your mind and will to manipulate this energy to achieve desired results. When you use this energy in a body-altering fashion, it works by literally re-arranging particles of matter in your body en masse, and so takes a good bit of energy to execute dramatic changes.

The difference between using a spell and shifting? Shifting uses a lot of energy, but also retains it once you actually shift. Spells vary. Let's say you do a spell to become a Mer when you touch water, ok? Now if it actually works, what you're doing is having the spell build up residual energy to trigger a process nearly identical to shifting except you take little to no part in it. Sounds nice, right? To sit back and just have it work for you? Wrong. Spells rarely do all the work for you, and even more rarely are you satisfied with the long term result should it work.

They rely on you constantly feeding them energy and thought to maintain themselves, whereas shifting (over time) becomes a learned skill you do not easily forget. If you don't feed the the spell (assuming it worked for you) and it runs out of energy, it stops working because everything that made up the spell on the level of energy (which allowed it to work) doesn't exist anymore. This is what actually happened when someone "loses their tail" when using a spell.

Shifting, as priorly stated, is a skill much like riding a bicycle. The motions and processes used to do it are not stored in normal memory (someone who doesn't shift for years may find that they pick it up again extremely fast, just like riding a bicycle), and thus you can't easily lose the ability to do it once you have mastered it to a finely-tuned point. Along with other good points mentioned on the site, shifting is an infinitely better choice for those looking for a true skill/ability and willing to put in the work for it.

However, magick does have a place in learning to shift. Seeing as most magical effects by the usage of spells are in fact temporary, you can use magick to instigate mental, phantom, and even physical shifts until you can do it by yourself. So without further ado, here is the ghastly magickal part of my shifting guide.

Making a Spell Work

Simple to do once you learn how, this is what I do when spell casting. You gather copious amounts of energy to manipulate, and preform your spell while distributing the pre-programmed energy.

Whoah. What's programming, you say? Programming energy is very much likened to programming data. With data, you program by a series of 0's and 1's. With energy, you program by intention.

Start by gathering a mass of energy. You can find far better tutorials to do this online. Once gathered, focus on a small part of the energy. Imagine a prompt, such as "become warm". Will your prompt into the energy, and you will find the energy becomes warm. When "willing" it, do not force it. Do not command it. Instead, suggest it. Suggest it becoming warm, and you will find it will become warm. Simple, right? A long spell is doing the same thing, except more complex commands over a longer periods of time. When you do the spell, chanting the spell coincides with programming and directing energy. I'm expecting you to experiment with this on your own, and learn the intricate nature by yourself.

Now for the body of the spell. Because this is where you decide what you want it to do, choose your words carefully. The words in a spell are actually the directions for the programming of the energy! For example, let's say I'm in need of a spell to cause a short-lived Mental Shift. I might choose a chant like this:

"For now, my mind must seem

As the aquatic thing I strive to be

When an hour's done past this spell

My true nature, no one could tell."

So I gather the energy, insert my will into it, program it... and then what? Then it is simple. Visualize the energy you've gathered being used for whatever you've programmed it to do. Let the energy go, off to do whatever you commanded it. Now, forget. Let go, and let the spell work.

There you go, the basics of spell work.
